{"id":1695,"date":"2014-04-22T15:49:07","date_gmt":"2014-04-22T15:49:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bretandemily.com\/?p=1695"},"modified":"2014-04-26T16:51:40","modified_gmt":"2014-04-26T16:51:40","slug":"three-days-on-the-dingle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bretandemily.com\/ireland\/?p=1695","title":{"rendered":"Three days on the Dingle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wow, we just had an incredible three days on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry.\u00a0 Both Good Friday and Easter Monday are University holidays in Ireland.\u00a0 Some of Bret&#8217;s colleagues invited us on a Good Friday hike, so we decided to make the most of the time off and join them for the hike, then stay in Dingle for a couple extra days.<\/p>\n<p>Mt. Brandon<\/p>\n<p>At 951m Mt. Brandon, by many accounts, is considered Ireland&#8217;s 2nd highest peak.\u00a0 It isn&#8217;t really, it is just that all of the higher peaks are in one mountain range, the Macgillycuddy&#8217;s Reeks, which has about 27 peaks stretched over 12 miles (8 of which are taller than Mt. Brandon. We may, in fact, have run in to many of them.\u00a0 There were quite of few folks out on the trail despite the weather and it was Good Friday.<\/p>\n<p>We had the trail to ourselves on the route down however, since we did not take the main trail.\u00a0 We did see some sheep, including a number of little, bitty lambs!\u00a0 So cute.\u00a0 We also saw an Ogham stone, which is a megolith with the oldest form of Irish writing (just slashes).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bretandemily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2725.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1707\" src=\"http:\/\/bretandemily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2725-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2725\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bretandemily.com\/ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2725-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bretandemily.com\/ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2725-1500x2000.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/bretandemily.com\/ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2725-624x832.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Shortly after coming back out of the clouds, Bret and I found our dream home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bretandemily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2729.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1708\" src=\"http:\/\/bretandemily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2729-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2729\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bretandemily.com\/ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2729-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bretandemily.com\/ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2729-2000x1500.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/bretandemily.com\/ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2729-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From there back to the car, we were on a small dirt road that winded through more pasture land.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bretandemily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2735.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1709\" src=\"http:\/\/bretandemily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2735-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2735\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bretandemily.com\/ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2735-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bretandemily.com\/ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2735-2000x1500.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/bretandemily.com\/ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_2735-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were all pretty exhausted by the time we got back to the car.\u00a0 It took us 20 minutes to drive over Conner Pass from the north side of the peninsula to the town of Dingle on the south side of the peninsula, but it is pretty dramatic landscape.\u00a0 After we supped with our hiking companions, Bret and I were pretty happy to be minutes away from our bed at Higgins B&amp;B in Dingle.<\/p>\n<p>Dingle Town and Fungie the Dolphin<\/p>\n<p>Saturday, the weather was a little more clear.\u00a0 We wandered around Dingle for a bit and enjoyed looking in the shops.\u00a0 There seem to be a number of crafty\/ artsy people, so intermingled with lots of touristy souvenir shops, there were some nice crafts and art to admire.\u00a0 There also were a couple local craft beers to admire.\u00a0 We stopped by the Dingle Brewing Company, where they brew Tom Crean&#8217;s Irish Lager.\u00a0 We enjoyed a short self-guided tour through the brewery, which is located in the old Dingle Dairy.\u00a0 We mostly learned about Tom Crean&#8217;s crazy Antarctic adventures.\u00a0 We also taste- tested the wares.\u00a0 Not bad for a lager.\u00a0 However, we preferred the peninsula&#8217;s other microbrewery, the West Kerry Brewery.\u00a0 They make a dark ale, a pale bitter, and a porter.\u00a0 We tested out the dark ale and the porter in the local pub.<\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon, we wanted to take the harbor boat tour.\u00a0 Unfortunately, there was not enough interest in that, so they gave a discount on the Fungie- the- dolphin tour.\u00a0 Fungie has apparently made a rock cave just outside of the Dingle harbor his home since 1983.\u00a0 At the discounted price, we were not granted the money back guarantee of a sighting though.\u00a0 Rest assured, we did see Fungie. It was sort of awful though and we really just felt bad for the poor dolphin that is apparently harassed by humans all day.\u00a0 We really enjoyed the views from the trip however.<\/p>\n<p><a local pub for a couple pints of our favorite local beers, then returned the b&amp;b, exhausted once again.<\/p>\n<p>Bike Ride around the Dingle<\/p>\n<p>Sunday, we woke to one of the nicest days we&#8217;ve had in Ireland.\u00a0 Not a cloud in the sky!\u00a0 After breakfast, we jumped on our bikes and began our journey around Slea Head.<\/p>\n<p><a the sights and cafes and restaurants.\u00a0 So many lovely views to photograph (Just wait for Bret to upload his pics!) and soooo many adorable baby sheep.\u00a0 Other than one tough climb, a minor bike crash when I didn&#8217;t get one of my shoes unclipped, and a bit of headwind towards the end of the day (luckily a tailwind for our final climb), the day was absolutely perfect!<\/p>\n<p>After our ride, we tried the local chip shop, which we were told by many has the best fish and chips around.\u00a0 It was pretty dang good.\u00a0 Finally, after a four month hiatus from driving, I decided that if little, old, Irish ladies can drive, so can I!\u00a0 I drove the manual rental car home, on the left side of the road-\u00a0 the whole way.\u00a0 Small victories.<\/p>\n<p>Hope everyone else
